They tell you they want your service rolled out by Q3 - great, then it’s your job to set benchmarks and goals from beginning to end. Instead of working off their timeline where you need to do check-ins and touch base to see what’s going on, take charge by establishing timelines and goals between the qualification and the close. We touch base when we lose sight of the goals and timelines and haven't heard back from the prospect in a while. We want to touch base when we don’t know what is going on with our deal. If I had a dollar every time I heard someone “touching base,” I’d be retired! The only time they don’t trust you is when you mention how much truth you’re spitting. Ultimately you are the expert providing the best solution to their needs - they expect you to be honest with them right off the bat. Instead of preparing them for your honesty, just speak the truth. When you say, “To be honest with you” all your customer hears is, “I’m lying to you because I want this sale.” Instead of replacing this with another phrase, just remove it from your vocabulary. When discussing different licensing options or service packages, all of a sudden sales teams become very honest. I can’t tell you how often this is said during a demo or proof of concept. This gives your prospect a clear understanding of why you are getting in contact and will help drive the deal forward. Instead, try using - “the purpose of this call is.” or “the reason why I am reaching out is…”.īe direct and give a reason why. You know why you are calling, they know why you are calling - so just say it. When you say this phrase in an email or a follow-up call, it tells a prospect that you have all the time in the world. You check in with your spouse to see what they need from the grocery store. You just check in with friends to see how they are doing. Next time you find yourself making a call, try the below techniques to get you through it. It’s 2019, let’s say goodbye to weak words and find new ways to serve your customers. Your perception of what you think is friendly, is really just wasting their time. You’re “just checking in” and “to be totally honest with you” doesn’t fool them, they aren’t dumb. They aren’t picking up the phone because you’re buddies - they are picking up because you have a service to sell and they are interested enough to listen. Here’s the deal, your customers expect to be sold to. I was lucky that my mentor pulled me aside and told me, “When you use weak language, you are wasting everyone's time and you sound like you don’t know what you are doing.”

If it weren’t for my first manager, I would still be starting my emails with, “Just checking in! :)”. I was also a victim of weak words early on in my career. We use these words because we are trying to avoid confrontation, we think we’re being friendly and we fear sounding “salesy”. We use them during qualification calls, demo and even during closing meetings. Weak words make you appear less confident about the message you are trying to get across and they get the best of every sales team. To use your words, I’ll be honest with you: in sales, we need to stop using weak language. Or maybe you’ve become Abe Lincoln with how many times you’ve told a lead, “look, to be honest with you.” Have you sent this email before?
